Write for the ALUG web site
Help with the website is welcome, because it's important to document our experiences so that others in a similar situation can learn from them.
Editing existing pages
We really need people to help keep the web site up to date. Pages currently known to need new authors:
If you want to edit a page, add /cgi-bin/editme.pl to the URL immediately after the alug.org.uk. For example:
http://www.alug.org.uk/articles/2001a/bestmeat.html
has an editor page at:
http://www.alug.org.uk/cgi-bin/editme.pl/articles/2001a/bestmeat.html
When you click Save, the change will be emailed to a webmaster for approval and upload. This is to stop spammers who have caused trouble for the site in the past.
If you don't know HTML, try the link below the save button for the WYSIWYGish Javascript editor (HTMLArea) which should work in Mozilla and IE. Alternatively, you can still edit files by downloading and emailing patches if you prefer.
Maybe you should ask the author if you would like to help edit it. You can find the author of some pages by looking on your browser's "Page Info" display (on the "Tools" menu in Mozilla). Email addresses can be found on the who does what page or by asking the main mailing list.
Mirroring the web site
The web site should be rather easy to mirror now, using your favourite mirror tool, like wget. Please email me when you put a mirror online and I will link to it.
New pages
Reviews of anything GNU/Linux-related, descriptions of innovative solutions, interviews, or your recent experiences can be useful materials for articles. If you're in any doubt about your article, start a discussion on the mailing list about it and see what people think.
Before you start writing, if possible, discuss the page on the mailing list (details on contacts page).
For more elaborate pieces of work, we will link to or mirror from members' personal sites if desired, but the aim is to make the ALUG site a useful library.
Discussion
If you want to talk about this, please use the mailing list.
